Anaemia

Anaemia

Anaemia is when a person's blood contains fewer red blood cells or less haemoglobin than normal.

Red blood cells are formed in the bone marrow, from which millions of cells are released into the blood every day, and contain a special protein called haemoglobin, which is responsible for binding oxygen in the lungs and transporting it to the tissues. Iron is an essential component of haemoglobin, and a deficiency of iron interferes with haemoglobin synthesis, a condition known as iron deficiency anaemia. It is the most common type of anaemia, affecting 25% of children, 30% of fertile women, 60% of pregnant women and 3% of men.

But why do iron shortages occur in the first place? According to the University of Tartu Hospital, the most common causes are:

  1. Lack of iron in the diet. The best sources of iron are animal lean meat, liver, beans, lentils.

  2. Impaired absorption of iron due to damage to the lining of the stomach or small intestine.

  3. Increased iron requirements in infants, adolescents and children during periods of intensive growth, as well as during pregnancy and lactation.

  4. Excessive blood loss due to bleeding, which is also the most common cause of iron deficiency in adults. In fertile women, this is mainly due to heavy menstrual bleeding, while in men and menopausal women it is due to bleeding from gastrointestinal tumours or ulcers.

A person with iron deficiency anaemia often feels tired and fatigued, becomes easily irritated and suffers from attention problems. They may also experience headaches, ringing in the ears, paleness, painful tongue, brittleness of nails and hair, among other symptoms.

A blood test is done to diagnose the disease, with low haemoglobin levels in iron deficiency, red blood cell counts at or below the normal range, red blood cell indices are usually low, and low ferritin levels indicate that the iron stores are depleted.

Are you one of those women-men who suffer from iron anaemia, or is your child affected? I can help you to get rid of it, just like I helped Rail.

"I'd like to share my health success story with you. Many of you in this group know that I have been dealing with low haemoglobin continuously since 2008. 2-3 times a year I went to give blood because of low haemoglobin. Each time I got a prescription for iron tablets and then I ate them and well very little went up from 100 to about 112 max. Plus of course Ferritin (iron stores in the body) non-existent 2-3. Since I last went to the doctor for a checkup in March and it was 109 then and didn't take any tablets, I started wondering last week what the number was. I knew it was fine 😀 but thought I'd check it out. And today I went and my haemoglobin is 142 - I hadn't seen a number like that in 10 years. 😍😍😍

I was crying with great gratitude and joy, because working with yourself is not always easy. I have also experienced setbacks and the feeling of being shaken. It is so human. But the feeling of being able to heal myself and thereby change my life is worth all the 'hardships' and every amount invested in learning and self-development is returned a million times over. 😘😘😘 thank you Heidi and all the others who support the groups."
