What colours do you see?

For some time now, pictures have been circulating on social media with a question underneath: What colour do you see? There's a picture of tennis shoes, a dress and an Adidas sweatshirt. Why do people see these colours so differently?

Stephen Hannah responds in a Daily Maily article:

Every person is unique and as a result the brain processes information differently. Depending on how colours are interpreted, one person may see colours one way and the person sitting next to them may see the same image in a different way.

Light entering the eye hits the retina - the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Light is converted into an electrical signal that travels along the optic nerves to the visual centre in the brain. The brain then interprets this signal.

It is not at all surprising that many respondents change their opinion of colours when they look at a colour in terms of shades of a colour other than blue, because we perceive a colour by comparing it to the surrounding shades, not the colour itself.

Colour vision is just one of the many tests performed in routine vision checks. It is possible that, depending on the degree of severity, colour blindness may go undetected because it is impossible to see the world through another person's eyes.

Conditions called prothanomalacia/prutanomalacia (seeing poorly or not at all in red), deuteranomalacia/deuteranomalacia (seeing poorly or not at all in green) and tritanomalacia/ tritanomalacia (seeing poorly or not at all in blue) can cause simple discomfort but can also be quite dangerous, often preventing people from continuing in some occupations. If you have any doubts about your colour perception, you should definitely see an optometrist.
